Questions to consider for your sustainability survey

  • Which changes can you realistically make in the next year, so the ranking only lists real options?
  • Do you want to hear from existing customers only, or from people who haven't bought yet?
  • Is the price question worth asking before you know what a greener version would cost?
  • Who will send the progress updates, and how often?

How to use the responses

Look at the ranking next to the barriers: a change people want but won't pay extra for tells you to absorb the cost or make it the default. Separate the ratings from customers who could name an effort from those who only half remembered it, because the gap between them is a communication problem you can fix quickly. When you report back, share specific steps and what didn't work, since the trust grid shows that's what people believe.

How to customize and share this template

  1. 1Replace the ranking items with the changes you are actually weighing up for your business.
  2. 2Edit the greeting to name your company, and say briefly why you're asking now.
  3. 3Share the link after a purchase or in your newsletter, and embed it on the page where you talk about sustainability.

Frequently asked questions

What should a sustainability survey ask customers?

What they already do, which changes they'd value from you, what stops them choosing greener options and what would make them trust your claims. Asking about habits before your plans keeps the answers more honest.

How do I avoid leading questions in a sustainability survey?

Ask about behaviour and obstacles in neutral terms, and give an easy way to say none of these apply. Avoid wording that makes one answer sound like the responsible one.

Will customers say they'll pay more and then not do it?

Often, yes. Treat the price answer as a sign of interest and check it against what people actually buy once a greener option is on sale.

Can I use this for employees instead of customers?

Yes. Copy the template, change the greeting and swap the ranking items for workplace changes such as travel, energy use or waste.
